How have they improved the green spaces within Sheffield?

Rivelin Valley Conservation Group was formed 18 years ago to maintain and enhance the historic Rivelin Valley. Over the years, the group has gained the respect of the local community and membership now stands at more than 500.

Recently the group undertook the restoration of the Rivelin Mill Pond. After the collapse of the dam wall, the area had been cordoned off and was unsafe. The Volunteer Task Team was involved in many hours of practical hands-on work, helping to clear and repair the derelict area and designing and constructing a pond-dipping platform, a picnic area with access for the less mobile and a seating area for outdoor classroom work.

The Task Team is at work in the valley for at least one full day every month, drawn from core of around 30 volunteers with ages ranging from 8 to 80 years old. There is expertise in all areas of engineering and construction, from building to dry stone walling.
