The food we eat is now produced on a global and industrial scale. The distances it travels from farm to plate can be huge with an equivalent large amount of carbon dioxide emitted along its lifecycle.
Beef in particular has a high environmental impact. It requires much more land, water and energy to produce it than vegetable protein. Cattle emit methane from their burping, and methane is 21 times worse that carbon dioxide for affecting climate change. Globally the meat industry’s greenhouse gas emissions are higher than all forms of transport.
Did you know? Lamb curry ready-made meals eaten in the UK amount to an annual carbon footprint equivalent to 5,500 car trips around the world or 140 million car miles.
Top Tips on Meat consumption
- Go for quality not quantity
- Choose Pork or Chicken as they have a lower carbon footprint
- If you cant go without completely, then go for locally reared meat such as that from Coppice House Farm or Moss Valley
- Use the local farmers market that runs in the city centre. Find out when they are happening
- Use local farm shops
- Try not to replace meat with dairy cattle based products like cheese
“Beset by foot and mouth outbreaks and export bans in recent years, UK beef producers are unlikely to react kindly to a massive drop in demand. The science is clear, however, that eating beef and dairy (along with prawns) is extremely carbon-intensive. In due course, science may come to the rescue.

- On a global scale the meat industry generates nearly 1/5 of the man-made greenhouse gases (GHG’s) that are accelerating global climate change, far more than transport.
- In the EU livestock production is responsible for 15% of GHG emissions it is responsible for about 8.5% and in the UK.
- About 40 calories of fossil fuel energy go into every calorie of feed lot beef, as opposed to the 2.2 calories of fossil fuel energy which goes into producing one calorie of plant-based protein.
- The estimated 634 gallons of fresh water required to produce one 5.2 ounce (147g) beef burger would be enough for a four-hour shower. For comparison, the same quantity of tofu requires 143 gallons of water to produce.
- A low meat diet (defined as 70g of beef and 325g of chicken and eggs per week), as recommended by Harvard Medical School, can reduce how much we need to spend in tackling climate change – estimated to be around $40 trillion globally by 2050 – by 54%.
- Cutting out meat altogether or avoiding ruminant meat (cows, sheep,goats) would cut the cost by 70%, and a vegan diet by 80%.
