I, Chris Tremblett, promise to dry my clothes outside

Help

Potential savings could be 40 Winter Garden Steel balls full of CO2 and £75 per year

Advice to help you fulfil your promise

Around 40% of households have a tumble dryer. In Sheffield that’s around 68,000 homes.

If all Sheffield households with a tumble dryer stopped using them over the summer it would be the same as taking off 2400 cars off the roads or cutting half a million pounds off Sheffielders energy bills.

Drying Tips

washing pegs on lineClothes smell fresher and feel nicer when hung outside to dry but if you don’t have a garden for a washing line, then what?

Here are a few tips to help:

  • Try a clothes horse or a wooden rack on a pulley.

  • Drying clothes on radiators is not recommended as it can make heating less efficient and you could get damp and condensation patches that can cause mould growth.

  • The bathroom is best – with the window slightly open.

Remeber to turn down your washing machine to 30 degrees to save energy and money too.

If you have to use a tumble dryer...

  • Do the loads back to back. The drum will still be warm so no need to keep heating it up wasting energy.

  • Make sure the lint collector and air vent are kept clean for cost effective drying (and to prevent accidental fires starting in the lint collector).

  • A blocked filter prevents the hot air from circulating freely, so clothes take longer to dry.

  • Make sure the room the dryer is in is well ventilated. This stops the tumble dryer from overheating. If it overheats, it takes longer to finish drying a load.

Thinking of buying or replacing your tumble dryer?

Make sure it’s an A rated machine and has the lowest energy consumption this will help you save money in the run and cut carbon emissions.
