Why avoid purchasing soil enriching composts?
Many soil enriching composts purchased in the UK contain peat. Peat is extracted from the ground of fragile environments that are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, destroying the habitats of many rare or endangered species.
The mining process of peat extraction also produces lots of carbon emissions. Peat lands contain one of the world's most important carbon stores, when they're drained the carbon is released back into the atmosphere where it contributes to global warming. This is why using peat in gardens releases a million tonnes of CO2 every year. Removing it from composts and grow-bags would cut those emissions at a stroke and would be the same as taking about 350,000 cars off the road.
Amateur gardeners are by far the biggest users of peat, using over 2 million cubic metres each year in the UK. It seems that many gardeners often don't realise the damage that peat extraction causes or that the compost they're buying contains peat.
The material produced as a result of home composting can help reduce our reliance on peat in the garden and dramatically reduce our carbon footprint.

This district energy network in Sheffield is one of the largest and most successful in the UK. There are 43km of pipeline installed across the city centre reaching Netherthorpe, Western Bank, the Heart of the City, Park Hill and Norfolk Park.
